Misconceptions of Hypnosis Caused by Stage Hypnotists
If you've seen a stage hypnotist on television or in person you may have a very distorted perception of what hypnosis is all about.
Stage hypnotists appear to deeply entrance people. And while that is sometimes the case (deep trance hypnosis) it is actually usually misleading because hypnosis isn't really something that is done to you, it's something you allow (or want) to happen to you.
When most people are hypnotized they are not in an unconscious state at all. They are merely in a relaxed, willing, and cooperative state of mind. With self help hypnosis this is exactly the type of mind state you want to be in.
Deep Trance Hypnosis
Deep trance hypnosis is usually the type of hypnosis that people think of when they think of hypnosis. This type of hypnosis is referred to as somnambulism by hypnotists. The thing to realize is that very few people ever enter into this type of hypnosis. In fact only about 2% of people are able to be hypnotized in this way. And this has nothing to do with the abilities of the hypnotist, it is all about the person being hypnotized.
The thing is, you don't need to go into this type of deep trance hypnosis in order to get great benefits from hypnosis. In fact it may not even be desirable.
The confusion is when people think of this type of deep trance hypnosis as the only "true" type of hypnosis. This is not the case at all.
It should also be mentioned that stage hypnotists can usually pick out people that are able to be put under this type of deep hypnosis after working with them for a short while. So they often choose these people as the ones to do their most ridiculous "tricks" with. But you should realize that this has much less to do with the abilities of the hypnotist as with the person that is being hypnotized.
